Finding out about National Parks

September30

We used ‘Running Reporter’ and atlases to find out about national parks.

We found out that there are 15 national parks in the UK and that the Lake District was one of the first ones.

Ordnance Survey Maps

September30

We spent some time looking at Ordnance Survey maps of the Lake District.

We started off by using the key to work out what some of the symbols mean. Then we practised 4-figure grid references before moving on to 6-figure grid references.

The only thing we didn’t practise was folding the maps up again at the end – we left that to Mr Morris, Mrs Kelly and Ms Ashton!

Compass Points

September30

We’ve been learning the 8 points of a compass: north, south, east, west, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west.

There are lots of different ways to remember the main 4. Here are just a couple: Never Eat Shredded Wheat … Naughty Elephants Squirt Water.

Using ‘Numbered Heads Together’ in Geography

September20

We used an activity called ‘Numbered Heads Together’ to learn facts about the United Kingdom.

We then created fact files to show what we had learned.

Did you know that you could fit the United Kingdom into the USA 38 times?

Or that approximately 84% of the UK’s population live in England?

Summarising

September18

In guided reading, we’ve been practising our summarising skills. The key is to pick out the most important information, and ignore everything else.

We practised summarising a passage from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by using sorting cards to decide what information should be included in a good summary.

Place Value

September18

We’ve been learning how to order numbers in maths. We found that, once you know what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter whether you’re ordering numbers with 3 digits or 7 digits … it’s simple!

We also used random digit cards to make the largest and smallest number possible.

Find someone who…

September10

Getting to know each other.

Who’s afraid of the dark? Who’s never been on an aeroplane? Who wants to jump out of a plane? Who likes watching Peppa Pig?
